National Flood Insurance Program
About the Program

Along with nearly 20,000 other communities across the United States, the City of Winfield has adopted and is enforcing a floodplain management ordinance to reduce future flood damage. The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is a Federal program enabling property owners in participating communities to purchase insurance protection against losses from flooding. This insurance is designed to provide an insurance alternative to disaster assistance to meet the escalating costs of repairing damage to buildings and their contents caused by floods.

In addition to providing flood insurance and reducing flood damages through floodplain management regulations, the NFIP identifies and maps the Nation's floodplains. Mapping flood hazards creates broad-based awareness of the flood hazards and provides the data needed for floodplain management programs and to actuarially rate new construction for flood insurance.

The linked Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM's) delineate the various flooding potentials Winfield faces.
