Report a Sewer Emergency
The City of Winfield assures prompt and appropriate response to every report  received  of a possible sewage backup or overflow so that any adverse effects to public health, water quality or customer service due to a confirmed sewer overflow can be minimized.

Upon arrival at the location of a spill into a house or a building, the responders will evaluate and determine if the spill was caused by a blockage in the owner's lateral or in the City-owned sewer main.
  • If a blockage or overflow is found in a property owner’s lateral, it will be clearly communicated that it is not the City’s responsibility to work on a private lateral. It will be recommended that property owner or tenant contact a licensed plumbing contractor to remove the blockage.
  • If a backup or overflow in the main line is found to have caused the spill in a house or building, the responders will attempt to remove the blockage from the system and restore flow to the area. If the blockage cannot be cleared within a reasonable time, or sewer requires construction repairs to restore flow, the responders will initiate containment and/or bypass pumping.  

What To Do If You Experience a Sewer Backup

If a property owner feels the City is responsible for any damages or expenses incurred as a result of a sewer backup, they must file a written claim with the City’s Risk Manager at 620-221-5500. In some cases, it may take several days before a property owner can fully itemize all damages and for this reason, they are advised to contact the City to report any pending claims. 

Please be advised that the filing of a claim does not necessarily mean your damages will be paid by the City. This will depend on the individual case and whether or not the results of the investigation determine the City has acted negligently.

Sewer backups can be a very unpleasant experience for all parties involved. The purpose of the above information is to assist property owners in doing what has to be done as quickly as possible and to minimize property damage. At the same time, it is our hope to avoid any misunderstandings when our Sewer maintenance staff respond to your emergency call.
