Who can recycle?
The City of Winfield offers weekly curbside (no alley collection) recycling services to any residential sanitation customer. While the program is not mandatory, it is encouraged as a means to divert the amount of waste being hauled to the Cowley County Transfer Station.
What is single-stream recycling?
Single-stream recycling is a system in which all recyclable materials –- fiber (newspaper, magazines, catalogs, phonebooks, junk mail cereal/dry food boxes, and cardboard) and RINSED containers (glass, steel, aluminum and #1 - #7 plastic) -– are placed, unsorted, in one recycling bin and sorted by a regional recycling center.
So.. I don't have to sort?
There is no sorting, by you at the house or or city staff curbside.
Is there anything special I need to do?
Please RINSE your #1 - #7 plastic containers, aluminum/steel cans, and glass bottles/jugs/jars. Also, recycle only flattened cardboard that is free of food and grease, ie. pizza boxes.
When will my recyclables be picked up?
Recyclables will be collected on the same day as your residential trash. While the trash and recyclable's collection trucks outwardly may look the same, each are clearly marked and serve different duties. Place your trash and recyclables at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on your collection day.
How will they know the difference between trash and recyclables?
If you are currently recycling, you may continue to use your existing recycling containers, only not sorting the material. If you wish to use another style container, make sure it is clearly marked "Recycling". Also, 64-gallon polycarts are available through the City (a deposit is required). The collection crews do the rest.
How much more will it cost me to participate in single-stream recycling?
No additional charges are required. Recycling charges have been and continue to be built into the monthly Solid Waste Collection fees established by City Ordinance. The charge for once-a-week residential collection of trash and recycling is currently $15.31, billed and payable monthly on you city bill.
If I do not receive Winfield trash/recycling service or forget to put out my recyclables can I take them to the Recycle Center?
No, the Recycle Center is no longer manned. However, the Cowley County Landfill is accepting household recyclables at no charge. Also, every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. the City of Arkansas City provides a drop off location for recyclables located at 1407 W. Madison.
